Historical Note: Gordon Kemp was born on February 9, 1925, in Atlanta, Georgia. As a child, he lived with his parents near the campus of the Georgia Institute of Technology. At the age of 15, Kemp baked bread at the campus bakery. At 18, Kemp joined the U.S. Navy and served for 3 years. During part of this time he was attached to the USS Leedstown. After leaving the navy, Kemp returned to high school to complete his degree. He earned a degree from Morehouse College and taught school after graduation. In 1953 Kemp joined the Lockheed-Georgia Company as part of their structure assembly area. After the plant was integrated in the 1960s, he received a promotion to a management-level position. Gordon Kemp died on April 22, 2007.
