Historical Note: Hans A. (Al) Troemel attended Southern Technical Institute in Chamblee, Georgia, as a student from 1957 to 1959, receiving an associate degree in civil engineering technology. Soon after graduating, he was invited to join the faculty and taught full-time while working on a bachelor's degree in physics from Oglethorpe University. Troemel also earned a professional license as a land surveyor in the State of Georgia. He taught courses in the civil engineering program at Southern Polytechnic State University from 1959 until his retirement in 1997 and was the acting department head during the last two years of his career. Troemel helped move the campus from Chamblee to Marietta in 1961 and witnessed the growth of the institution from a two-year school to a university. In the year that he retired, his students and former students placed a Troemel monument and accompanying plaque on campus. The momument is permanently registered with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).
